Smart Pet Gear: What Is Worth Paying a Subscription For?
Exposing the hidden subscriptions inside smart collars, doors, and water fountains. Learn what is functionally essential vs. commercial upsell.
The Subscription-ification of Pet Ownership
Ten years ago, buying pet gear was a one-time transactional purchase. Today, the pet tech industry is actively shifting toward recurring SaaS models. A physical product is priced artificially low upfront, only to require a mandatory recurring subscription to access core tracking functions or smartphone app pairing.
As an informed buyer, you must evaluate whether the ongoing subscription fee represents genuine utility (like active cellular tower leasing) or artificial software locks.
Genuine Utility: Active GPS Tracking
For active real-time GPS locators (like Tractive or Fi), a monthly subscription is physically necessary. These devices contain a miniature cellular modem and SIM card that connects to global cellular networks (LTE-M/2G/3G).
When your dog escapes, the device broadcasts coordinates across cellular Towers back to your smartphone. The monthly fee pays for cellular data access. Without a subscription, the tracker cannot transmit coordinates once it leaves your home's local Wi-Fi range.
Artificial locks: Smart Feeders & Fountains
On the other hand, many automatic smart feeders and fountains attempt to lock basic timing schedules or app controls behind subscription walls.
A reliable smart feeder (like Catit Pixi Smart Feeder or SureFeed) should operate completely offline. Your scheduled feeding portions should be stored locally in the hardware's flash memory. If your Wi-Fi drops, the motor should still actuate at 8:00 AM. If a feeder requires an active cloud subscription to activate a physical motor wheel, do not purchase it.
Our Subscription Filter Rules:
- Buy GPS Subscriptions: Real-time out-of-house safety is worth cellular leasing fees.
- Avoid Feeder/Fountain Subscriptions: Portion schedules should be stored locally in the hardware.
- Calculate Consumables: Always check standard battery replacements and filter costs before purchasing.
