Flip over almost any pet collar, coat, or harness box in a local retail store, and you will see a simple table saying: "Medium: 20–45 lbs."

This classification is an industry shortcut designed to simplify manufacturing lines, not protect your pet's physical comfort. Let's look at the physics of canine dimensions:

Example A: The Greyhound (30 kg)

A Greyhound is built out of tall skeletal frames, a highly deep but thin rib cage, and a narrow neck. A standard 30 kg dog harness will slide right off their chest, or fail to adjust narrow enough at the shoulder blades, allowing them to slip out instantly.

Example B: The Bulldog (30 kg)

A Bulldog of identical weight is short, broad-chested, and possesses a neck thickness that practically merges with their head. A 30 kg harness sized for average dogs will squeeze their windpipe, causing coughing and physical airway distress.

Airway Protection: Why neck shape dictates collar vs. harness

For dogs prone to tracheal collapse (toy breeds like Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, and Yorkies), walking on a standard collar is highly dangerous. Pulling puts pressure directly on the trachea (windpipe), which is structured out of soft, flexible cartilage rings. Under pressure, these rings can snap or collapse permanently.

For these breeds, a specialized Step-In Harness (like Gooby Simple Step-In III) that redirects physical tension entirely around the sternum (breastbone) and rib cage is essential.
